Field Mission: Gabiley Region | Soil Degradation & Erosion Assessment

Recently, our IMC technical team undertook a mission in Gabiley focusing on ground-truthing soil degradation and erosion levels within the pilot watershed. 🌱 The mission aimed to validate our remote sensing and GIS-based soil degradation maps through on-the-ground data collection—identifying types of erosion, soil conditions, vegetation cover, invasive species mapping, and local drivers of land degradation. 👷‍♂️ We collected detailed georeferenced field data capturing evidence of sheet, rill, and gully erosion and documenting real impacts on farmland and rangeland ecosystems. This effort contributes to strengthening data-driven decision-making for soil conservation and sustainable land management across Somaliland.

Climate Outlook Forum

The Somaliland Information Management Center (IMC) convened an important forum bringing together government institutions, international and local partners, and the media to share the rainfall forecast for the upcoming Deyr season (October–December). 🌧️ This engagement aimed to strengthen preparedness and coordination among key stakeholders ahead of the anticipated seasonal changes. IMC Completes Three-Week Land Cover & Invasive Species Mapping Training

Somaliland’s Information Management Centre (IMC), with the technical support of FAO–SWALIM and funding from the European Union, successfully completed a three-week training on Land Cover and Invasive Species Mapping. The training enhanced the capacity of national institutions to monitor, assess, and manage land resources more effectively, paving the way for smarter and more sustainable land management practices. By strengthening technical expertise, this initiative supports both environmental resilience and local community livelihoods, contributing to informed decision-making for sustainable development in Somaliland.
